The relationship label on my match seems wrong (e.g., showing "half nephew" instead of "first cousin"). Why?

DNA can't tell the exact relationship between two people on its own β€” it can only tell us how much DNA is shared. Many relationships share similar amounts (first cousin, half nephew/niece, half aunt/uncle, etc.), so our system lists all the possibilities.

If you click on the displayed label, you'll see the other possible relationships. We're working on improving this by using birth year information (when provided) to better guess the most likely relationship.
