What time periods does the ancient DNA dataset cover?

Our dataset spans roughly 36,000 years of history, divided into eight major eras:

  • Upper Palaeolithic (~36,000–14,000 BCE) — ice-age hunters

  • Mesolithic (~10,000–6,000 BCE) — post-ice-age foragers

  • Neolithic (~6,000–3,500 BCE) — early farmers

  • Chalcolithic (~3,500–2,500 BCE) — copper age

  • Bronze Age (~2,500–800 BCE) — chariot peoples and kingdoms

  • Iron Age (~800 BCE–400 CE) — classical period

  • Roman Period (~1–400 CE) — empire era

  • Medieval (~400–1,200 CE) — early Middle Ages
